[ Visit Site ] The Transgenic Plant Unit at the University of Connecticut Biotechnology Center conducts basic and applied research involving gene transfer and molecular analysis on a broad range of plant species. The laboratory provides a state-of-the-art facility and techniques for research in molecular cloning, production of transgenic plants, plant tissue culture, plant physiology and biochemistry.

Current projects conducted through the Unit include: genetic improvement of tomato, canola, watermelon, aspen, petunia and chrysanthemum; production of cost effective vaccines, antibodies and industrial enzymes in plants, molecular mechanisms of plant hormone and gravity/micro-gravity effects on higher plants.

The research projects also are currently supported by federal agencies, state agencies, and private organizations. The Unit conducts contract research projects with industry collaborators.
